If this is your first time signing up for FamilyWhere®, you will receive a free 30-day trial. After the free trial, service is $10 per month to locate all of the phones on your account.
For security reasons, phones receive a text message from FamilyWhere® when they become locatable. Additionally, locatable phones receive a periodic notification via text message that they can be located. These messages are received about once every month.
If you would like to change how often a phone is notified, you can alter family member notification frequency in FamilyWhere® by clicking Settings and then clicking Family member notifications.
Yes, if the phone is turned on and in service, you can use T-Mobile FamilyWhere® to find it. Keep in mind that if your lost or stolen phone does not have GPS or if it does have GPS, but is not in clear view of the sky, your location may be reported as a wide area.
T-Mobile FamilyWhere® uses GPS technology to get locations. GPS location can be very accurate—to within a few yards—if the phone can "see" the GPS satellites. If the phone is indoors or in a place where it cannot directly see the GPS satellites, the system automatically uses alternative location technologies. In these cases, you may receive a location with an accuracy of a few hundred yards or more. When you request a location you will be given the best possible location fix given the conditions.
In some situations, T-Mobile FamilyWhere® will not be able to locate a phone. The most common reasons are:
In these cases, T-Mobile FamilyWhere® will tell you that the phone was not able to be located.
Note: If you have received a location from a phone in the past but are experiencing difficulty getting a location, try "power cycling" the phone:
Yes. While any T-Mobile phone can be located with FamilyWhere®, the most accurate locations available are with A-GPS (Assisted GPS) phones that use the T-Mobile network and have a clear line of sight to GPS satellites (e.g. outdoors or on a car dashboard). Devices not in a clear line of sight to GPS satellites or non A-GPS devices may return a cell tower location with an accuracy of a few hundred yards to a few miles.
Phones that have GPS will generally provide the most accurate location. When GPS location data is not available, T-Mobile uses its network and cell towers to approximate location. The following T-Mobile phones are GPS capable and also provide the most accurate network location results:
FamilyWhere® uses a number of techniques to determine a phone's location. T-Mobile phones that have A-GPS (Assisted GPS) return the most accurate locations when they have a clear line of sight to GPS satellites. For example, the phone is outside, in a car, or near a window. For phones where A-GPS is not available, FamilyWhere® uses cell tower information to provide the most accurate location possible, which is usually within a few hundred yards to a few miles of the phone's actual location. This includes non A-GPS phones, as well as A-GPS phones that are not in a clear line of sight to GPS satellites.
In some situations, FamilyWhere® will not be able to locate a phone. The most common reasons are:
To locate a phone on your account from the web, you must first add this phone to FamilyWhere®. You can do this either during FamilyWhere® registration or by going to FamilyWhere®, clicking Settings, and then clicking Add a family member.
If you have already added a phone to be locatable by FamilyWhere®, locate the phone by doing the following:
You can edit the name of phones in FamilyWhere®, as well as select or upload a custom picture for each phone.
To personalize your phones:
Schedule Checks allow you to set a day and time to automatically locate a phone on your FamilyWhere® account. For example, you can set a Schedule Check for 4:00PM every weekday to make sure your child gets home from school safely.
Once you create a Schedule Check, your phone will be located and you will be sent its location by text message or email per your preference.
To create a schedule check:
To edit a schedule check:
A Landmark is an address which has been given a name and saved in the My Landmarks sub-tab on the Locator page. For example, you could save your child's school located at 123 Washington Street as School. When you look at the map page, your child's school would then show up on the map as School.
Landmarks are most useful with Schedule Checks. For example, if you create a Landmark at your home address and call it Home, you can then check whether your child arrived Home at a set time on a particular day.
